Selenophorus seriatoporus Putzeys View in CoL ( Fig. 12 View Figs )

Selenophorus seriatoporus Putzeys 1878a: 23 View in CoL . Type locality: Mexico (Cordova), in cultivated fields under dirt clods. Types: MNHN.

Descriptive Notes. Dorsum blackish, not metallic. Pronotum with base more finely rugose than punctulate. Elytra with seriate punctures large, subfoveate. Dimorphism + ♂ 1 — ♀ 1. Median lobe with dorsoapical plate straight, not widened apically. Endophallus with 2 rows of large, slender spines: 4 or 5 in left half and 1 or 2 more distally in right half of ostium; lamina narrow, spatulate without apical hook. ABL 8.0–9.0 mm.

Range. USA: sTX*; Mexico; Guatemala; Belize *; Honduras *; “South America”.

Remarks. Selenophorus seriatoporus occupies a wide geographic range from South America northward to the eastern regions of Mexico. We discovered only a few examples (all females) in southern Texas, USA (new country record). An undescribed species in western Mexico from Guerrero north to Sonora is similar. Given the placeholder name S. seriatoporus species group sp. A, it is conspecific with specimens labeled “ S. seriatoporus species group sp. UASM-1” by G. E. Ball. This undescribed species differs from typical S. seriatoporus by its larger size (ABL 8.8–10.0 mm); the elytral seriate punctures are much smaller; the elytra are duller with subgranulate microsculpture most apparent in females; the median lobe is with dorsoapical plate longer, somewhat spatulate, and armed with a single row of six large, slender spines confined to the left half of the endophallus. Until the Mexican fauna is thoroughly reviewed, we prefer not to propose a new scientific name.
