Recognition. Distinguished from similar Hemisopalus Casey (sensu lato) by the ventral surface of metatarsomere 1 with inner setae densely packed in a single brush-like row. In four of the five Nearctic species, the females with protarsomere 1 markedly dilated and with ventral pad of dense vestiture. Males with two pairs of anal setae. Dimorphism + ♂ 2 — ♀ 2 or + ♂ 2 + ♀ 2.
