Included taxa. Franciscodoras , Acanthodoras , Agamyxis , Astrodoradinae , Doradinae, and Wertheimerinae.

Diagnosis. The Doradidae is diagnosed by the following characters: midlateral scutes present (#118: 0>1, exclusive), coronomeckelian bone connected to dentary (#137: 0>1, reversed in Astrodoradinae , Acanthodoras , Agamyxis , Centrochir , Centrodoras , Doraops , Lithodoras , Megalodoras , Platydoras [except Platydoras sp. ], and Pterodoras ), ligament present between Müllerian ramus and lateral line (212: 0>1, exclusive), infranuchal ligament between posterior nuchal plate and the first rib ossified (#213: 1>2, exclusive), first free vertebra sixth (#217: 2>1, present also in other non-Doradidae catfishes), pectoral-fin spine locking foramen absent (#253: 0>1, foramen absent also in some non-Doradidae catfishes), six or seven branched rays in the ventral lobe of the caudal fin (#306: 1>0, reversed back to state 1 in Doradinae ).
