Description. Adult. Colouration of dry material. General body colour dark brown. Vertex brown yellowish, genal processes brown yellowish. Antenna brown yellowish, segments 3–6 each with black apex, segments 7 and 8 each with apical half black, and segments 9 and 10 entirely black. Thoracic dorsum dark brown yellowish to dark brown with two light yellow spots on each side of mesoscutum. Forewing transparent, veins brown. Abdominal sclerites dark brown yellowish to dark brown, intersegmental membranes yellow. Male proctiger brown yellowish; paramere brown yellowish with black apex; subgenital plate brown yellowish, sometimes black basally. Female terminalia brown yellowish.
Structure. Body length 1.5–1.9. Vertex 0.6–0.8 times as long as broad. Genal processes 0.2–0.3 times as long as vertex. Antenna 1.9–2.9 times as long as head width. Metatibia 0.9–1.1 times as long as head width. Forewing 4.4–4.9 times as long as head width, 2.4–2.7 times as long as wide; vein M 1.7–2.3 times longer than vein M 1+2; m 1 cell value 1.3–1.8; vein Cu 1a 1.5–2.3 times longer than vein Cu; cu 1 cell value 0.8–1.2. Male terminalia as in Figs 86–88 View FIGURES 76–88 . Proctiger 0.6 times as long as head width. Paramere 0.5 times as long as proctiger, sub-parallel with anterior margin slightly curved, posterior margin straight then curved apically, digitiform apical process with posterior margin sinuate, forming a strongly sclerotised small, posteriorly directed tooth. Apical segment of aedeagus 1.1 – 1.2 times as long as paramere. Female proctiger 0.8 times as long as head width; circumanal ring 0.3–0.4 as long as proctiger.
Measurements (in mm) (3 ♂, 5 ♀). Head width ♂ 0.46–0.51, ♀ 0.47–0.58; vertex length ♂ 0.18, ♀ 0.17–0.24; vertex width ♂ 0.27–0.29, ♀ 0.26–0.32; antenna length ♂ 1.34–1.45, ♀ 0.91–1.28; metatibia length ♂ 0.50–0.57, ♀ 0.48–0.54; forewing length ♂ 2.07–2.3, ♀ 2.42–2.541; forewing width ♂ 0.78–0.87, ♀ 0.91–1.05; male proctiger length 0.28–0.30; paramere length 0.14–0.16; distal segment of aedeagus length 0.17; female proctiger length 0.36– 0.41; female anal ring length 0.11–0.14.
Fifth-instar immature. Corresponding to the generic description, see also comments below.
Etymology. Named after the Guanches, the pre-Castillian inhabitants of Tenerife who were defeated in the Battle of Aguere by the Castillians.
Host plant CI. Convolvulus floridus (Convolvulaceae) .
Distribution CI. Tenerife, adventive in La Palma. Percyella guanche is native to Tenerife. Its presence in an urban environment in La Palma suggests an accidental introduction along with the host plant.
Biology. In the galls, we observed immatures and adults of the predator Anthocoris salicis Lindberg ( Hemiptera : Anthocoridae ), also ectoparasitic mites (Prostigmata: Trombidiidae ) attached to both adults and immatures ( Fig. 277 View FIGURES 269–280 ).
Comments. Percyella guanche differs from the other Percyella species in the paramere shape: the posterior and anterior margins are almost parallel (not parallel in P. benahorita , P. gomerita or P. canari ); also the posterior margin of the apical process is sinuate with a hump (almost straight in P. benahorita , straight in P. gomerita and slightly sinuate in P. canari ). No characters were found to separate the females and immatures of P. guanche from its other congeners.
