Ozotrioza styracearum Kieffer, 1905 View in CoL

Distribution. India: West Bengal ( Kieffer 1905).

Host plant. Unidentified Styracaceae according to Kieffer (1905), emended to Symplocos theaefolia [sic] (= lucida ) ( Symplocaceae ) by Houard (1922) who, however, did not explain this change.

Comments. As for Ozotrioza laurinearum , Kieffer’s (1905) description of O. styracearum is not diagnostic, though more detailed than that of the former, the type material is destroyed and the identity of the host questionable. Also, O. styracearum was not reported again since its original description and its identity ramains doubtful. Trioza jambolanae Crawford, 1917 , an Asian species associated with Syzygium spp. ( Myrtaceae ) that also induces galls, matches the description of O. styracearum in the body colour and size, the head shape including the genal processes, the antenna length, the 1+2 apical metatibial spurs, the forewing shape and the simple male proctiger. The species also displays the only two generic characters that Kieffer (1905) used for erecting Ozotrioza : the widened two apical antennal segments and the metatibial base bearing several small teeth. The described triozid species associated with Styracaceae ( Matsumoto 1997) or Symplocos ( Yang et al. 2013) differ considerably from O. styracearum in the forewing shape and venation. Based on this evidence, we conclude that O. styracearum is identical or closely related to Trioza jambolanae .

Kieffer (1905) erected Ozotrioza for the two Indian species O. laurinearum and O. styracearum without designating a type species. The two species do not seem to be closely related (cf. comments on Ozotrioza laurinearum and O. styracearum ). For stabilising the nomenclature, we designate here O. styracearum as type species of Ozotrioza . This species is chosen as its description is more detailed and its identity established.
