Cleotomiroides tobii new species

( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 , 4 View FIGURE 4 , 5 View FIGURE 5 D–F, 7, 8, 9)

Diagnosis. Recognized by the relatively large size, fuscous basic coloration contrasting with rusty apical half of the clavus, conspicuous white fascia and maculae on the hemelytron, and form of the male genitalia. This new species can be distinguished from two known congeners by the fuscous general coloration, broad hypophysis of the left paramere, and shortened apical appendages of the endosoma.

Description. Body generally blackish brown, relatively large; dorsal surface less shining, widely shagreened or roughened, with sparsely distributed, semierect setae and with more sparsely distributed, longer, upright setae. Head dull brown, oblique; eyes large; vertex narrowly carinate basally. Antenna dull yellowish brown, almost linear; segment II slightly incrassate toward apex; segments III and IV brown, weakly terete. Labium shiny dark brown, reaching subapical part of mesocoxa. Pronotum with a narrow collar narrower than any antennal segment; pleura minutely rugose; ostiolar peritreme strongly protruding medially, with ivory white posterior margin of evaporative area. Hemelytron with a white, continuous fascia posterior to scutellum across clavus, corium and exocorium; apical half of clavus, posterior to white fascia, rusty; apical 1/3 of corium and subapical part of clavus with variable white maculae; membrane smoky brown, except for pale, translucent anterior corner and posterior margin. Coxae and legs brown or darker; meso- and metacoxae widely pale brown. Abdomen wholly dark brown, shagreened. Male genitalia ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 , 7 View FIGURE 7 ): Genital segment with a ventral spine ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ). Left paramere with broad hypophysis. Phallotheca weakly C-shaped, somewhat twisted, terminated in apical hook. Endosoma C-shaped, broad, with short apical appendages. Female genitalia ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ): Bursa copulatrix generally toughened; sclerotized ring small, thick-rimmed.

Measurements. 3/Ƥ: Total body length 3.3–3.6/ 3.7–4.0; length from apex of clypeus to cuneal fracture 2.45–2.65/ 2.65–2.75; head width across eyes 0.69–0.72/ 0.67–0.74; vertex width 0.21–0.23/ 0.30–0.32; lengths of antennal segment I–IV 0.30–0.33, 1.05–1.08, 0.60–0.63, 0.40–0.45/ 0.31–0.33, 1.06–1.13, 0.60–0.63, 0.43–0.48; labial length 1.17–1.20/ 1.32–1.53; mesal pronotal length 0.69–0.72/ 0.75–0.80; basal pronotal width 0.96–0.96/ 1.02–1.07; width across hemelytron 1.05–1.11/ 1.21–1.26; and lengths of metafemur, tibia and tarsus 1.18–1.22, 1.65–1.77, 0.28–0.30/ 1.27–1.35, 1.80–1.95, 0.28–0.30.

Etymology. Named after Dr Randall Toby Schuh, in honor of his outstanding contributions to heteropteran systematics.

Distribution. Thailand (Nakhon Nayok & Nakhon Ratchasima Provinces).

Biology. Collection records suggest this new species has a multivoltine life cycle, or appears continuously throughout a year. A male adult was captured from inflorescences of (presumably) Trema sp. ( Ulmaceae ), and a female was found on a leaf of Macaranga sp. ( Euphorbiaceae ). The exact breeding host remains unknown, however.
