Genus Eunereis Malmgren, 1865 View in CoL

Eunereis Malmgren 1865: 182 View in CoL –183

Type species. Eunereis longissima ( Johnston, 1840)

Diagnosis (emended from Bakken & Wilson 2005, new feature highlighted in boldface). Prostomium with anterior margin entire, one pair of antennae, one pair of biarticulated palps with conical palpostyles, four pairs of tentacular cirri with distinct cirrophores. Two pairs of eyes. One apodous anterior segment, greater than length of chaetiger 1. Maxillary ring of pharynx without paragnaths. Oral ring, conical paragnaths: Area V, present or absent; VI, present or absent, smooth bars present or absent; VIĪVIII, present or absent. Dorsal notopodial ligule present, similar in size or markedly reduced on posterior chaetigers. Prechaetal notopodial lobe present or absent; when present, restricted to a limited number of anterior chaetigers. Acicular process present or absent. Dorsal cirrus basally attached to dorsal notopodial ligule throughout all chaetigers, lacking basal cirrophore. Neuropodial postchaetal lobe absent or present. Notoaciculae absent from chaetigers 1 and 2. Notochaetae: homogomph spinigers present, homogomph falcigers present or absent. Neurochaetae, dorsal fascicle: homogomph spinigers and heterogomph falcigers present. Neurochaetae, ventral fascicle: heterogomph spinigers and heterogomph falcigers with long or short blades present.

Remark. Nine species are known for the genus Eunereis ( Read & Fauchald 2018c) . Among them, most species were reported from the Pacific site of the North and Central America, with E. paitillae Fauchald, 1977 from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, E. elittoralis ( Eliason, 1962) and E. longissima from the European waters, and E. marri (Monro, 1939) from the southeastern India Ocean ( Read & Fauchald 2018c). The present study reports the genus for the first time from Taiwan.

The generic diagnosis is emended slightly to accommodate the presence of short neuropodial heterogomph falcigers in E. eugeniae , E. longipes , E. paitillae , as well as E. shichengensis n. sp. ( Hartman 1936: 480, fig. 53e; Fauchald 1977: 25, fig. 5b, c; León-González & Solís-Weiss 2000: 551, fig. 1e, g; Fig. 6D, E View FIGURE 6 ).
