Genus ASYNONYCHUS Crotch View in CoL

Asynonychus Crotch, 1867: 388 (type species A. godman [n]i Crotch [= Naupactus cervinus Boheman, 1840 ]). — Hustache 1947: 15, 136. — Lanteri 1986: 163.

DESCRIPTION. — This genus is readily distinguished by having long, slender antennae, with scape extending to prothorax below eyes, a long sulcus on forehead, a blunt carina on either side of rostrum, a mandibular scar ending in a lateral pointed tooth, elongate-oval, asymmetric, strongly protruding, somewhat backwards tilting eyes, strongly denticulate fore tibiae, and hind tibiae without distinct corbel plate.

DISTRIBUTION. — South America.

BIOLOGY. — Soil inhabiting larvae, non-specialist adults, a wide range of hostplants for both stages.

ETYMOLOGY. — ‘Asynónychus’ is a Greek compound meaning literally ‘not-together-claw’, from ‘a’ (privative alpha) = not, ‘syn’ = together, and ‘ónyx, ónychos’ = claw.

REMARKS. — Asynonychus is a typical member of the Naupactus group of genera ( Naupactini ).
