Material examined. Holotype subadult male ( MGAB CUM 1782 ), Hole-in-the-Wall, La Parguera, Puerto Rico, Caribbean Sea, 17°56'32.95"N, 67°4'42.09"W, extracted from sponges, 67 m depth, November 18, 2009, collected by Nikolaos V. Schizas. GoogleMaps
Diagnosis. Carapace with smooth integument; pseudorostrum 0.43 times frontal lobe length, serrate anterior margin; smooth ventral margin, ocular lobe with five large lenses; maxilliped 3 propodus 1.6 times carpus length; uropodal peduncle 0.7 times last pleonite length, 1.16 times endopod length, one simple short seta on outer margin, five ones on medial margin, curved endopod.
Description. Subadult male (holotype MGAB CUM 1782).
Body size: 1.75 mm length.
Carapace ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 A). Smooth integument, 0.47 times rest of entire body length, 1.58 times as long as high, long and large siphon, pseudorostrum 0.43 times frontal lobe length, a few setae on dorsal margin of carapace, serrate anterior margin, no visble anterior-ventral corner, smooth ventral margin, ocular lobe with five large lenses. Pereon articles 2–4 with one dorsal denticle, missing, probably broken, on 5th article of pereon.
Pleon with one denticle on the 1st article (broken) and on the 2nd article.
Antenna 1 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 B). Basal article as long as rest of articles together, two long simple setae on medial distal corner, middle article with one simple seta on medial margin, one simple and one compose pedunculate seta on outer distal corner, apical article with one simple and two simple setae on outer distal corner, main flagellum 0.9 times apical article length, with long aesthetascs, minute accessory flagellum with four compose pedunculate setae.
Maxilliped 3 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 C). Basis 0.54 times as long as rest of articles together, one plumose seta on medial margin, two long plumose setae on outer process; merus 1.7 times as long as ischium, one plumose seta on outer margin; carpus 1.17 times as long as merus length, one pappose seta on medial margin, one plumose longer one on outer distal margin; propodus 1.6 times as long as carpus, two pairs of pappose setae on medial margin; dactylus 0.62 times as long as propodus, one subterminal microserrate robust seta and one terminal robust microserrate seta 0.65 times dactylus length; slender incompletely developed exopod.
Pereopod 1 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 D). Basis 0.53 times as long as rest of articles together, two plumose setae on medial margin; merus 1.33 times as long as ischium, one simple setae on medial margin of ischium, one simple seta on outer margin of merus; carpus 2.12 times as long as merus, three simple setae on medial margin, one on outer distal margin; propodus as long as carpus, two simple short setae on both margins; dactylus 0.6 times as long as propodus, one subterminal seta on each margin, one terminal robust seta 0.85 times dactylus length; slender incompletely developed exopod.
Pereopod 2 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 E). Basis 0.47 times as long as rest of articles together; merus 4.25 times as long as ischium; carpus 1.17 times as long as merus, two plumose setae on outer margin, two unequal stout setae on carpus medial distal corner; dactylus 1.6 times as long as propodus, two medial short stout setae on medial margin, one on lateral margin, one stout subterminal seta on each margin and one terminal robust seta 1.38 times dactylus length; slender incompletely developed exopod.
Pereopod 3 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 F). Basis 0.8 times as long as rest of articles together; merus 2.8 times as long as ischium, one simple seta on medial margin; carpus as long as ischium, one simple short seta on outer margin; propodus 1.5 times as long as carpus; dactylus 0.24 times as long as propodus, fused with robust curved terminal seta; slender, incompletely developed exopod.
Pereopod 4 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 G). Basis 0.84 times as long as rest of articles together; merus 1.33 times as long as ischium, one simple seta on medial margin; carpus 1.16 times as long as merus; propodus 1.6 times as long as carpus; dactylus 0.27 times as long as propodus, fused with terminal robust curved seta; slender incompletely developed exopod.
Pereopod 5 ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 H). Basis 0.57 times as long as rest of articles together; merus 1.16 times as long as ischium, one simple seta on medial margin; carpus 1.36 times as long as merus, one simple short seta on outer distal margin; propodus 1.1 times as long as carpus; dactylus 0.24 times as long as propodus, one simple short seta on medial distal margin, fused with terminal robust curved seta.
Uropod ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 I). Peduncle 0.7 times as long as last pleonite, 1.16 times endopod length, one simple short seta on outer margin, five ones on medial margin; exopod 0.96 times endopod length, one simple short seta on outer margin of each article; curved endopod, one simple stout short seta on medial margin, one subterminal and one terminal robust seta 0.58 times endopod length.
Etymology. The species is named curvicauda in reference to the curved endopod of uropod.
Remarks. Cumella curvicauda sp. nov. male resembles two other species of Cumella with short and curved uropodal rami, C. clavicauda Calman, 1911 and C. seticaudata sp. nov. It differs in: 1) antenna 1 with peduncle apical article 1.5 times longer than in C. seticaudata ; 2) maxilliped 3 with basis 1.3 times longer than in C. seticaudata and 0.35 times shorter than in C. clavicauda ; 3) maxilliped 3 with an evident outer process of basis; 4) maxilliped 3 propodus 1.95 times longer than in C. clavicauda ; 5) maxilliped 3 propodus with four vs. 3 pappose setae on medial margin in C. clavicauda ; 6) shorter uropodal peduncle with 5 vs. 6 medial setae; 7) uropodal endopod with two vs. four medial setae in C. clavicauda .
