Manota iota View in CoL sp. n.

Figs. 9 View FIGURE 9 A–E

Male. Colour. Head brown, face somewhat paler. Antenna pale brown. Clypeus yellow, mouthparts pale yellowish. Thorax pale brown, medial part of scutum and scutellum seem darker brown. Legs yellowish, extreme base of coxa 3, trochanters 2 and 3 and apical third of femur 3 infuscated in varying intensity. Wing pale greyish brown; haltere pale brown with darker brown knob. Abdomen pale brown, tergites medially seeming darker brown, sternites paler than tergites. All setosity pale, yellowish or brownish, the thicker setae seeming darker than the finer ones. Head. Antennal flagellomere 4, Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 A. Palpomere 3 of maxillary palpus with apicomesial thumb-like extension, with 3 apically curved sensilla; palpomere 4 with parasegment; palpomere 5 ca. 1.1–1.2 times longer than palpomere 4.

Number of strong postocular setae 10–11. Thorax. Anepisternum setose, with 36–39 setae in the type locality, 60 setae in the Ecuador specimen; anterior basalare non-setose; preepisternum 2 non-setose; laterotergite non-setose; episternum 3 setose, with 7–10 setae. Legs. Mid and hind tibial organs absent. Wing. R1 meeting C well on the basal half of the costal margin; the sclerotized part of M2 not extending to the level of the tip of R1; wing length 1.4 mm. Hypopygium. Figs. 9 View FIGURE 9 B–E: Sternite 9 laterally fused with gonocoxa, posterior margin short, transverse, not reaching the middle of gonocoxa, anterior margin deeply incised, the area apparently representing sternite 9 nonsetose. Ventral mesial margin of gonocoxa angulate, with a few slightly stronger setae at the angle deviating from the other setosity; posterolateral part of gonocoxa not drawn into a lobe. Parastylar lobe membranous, covered by the mesial margin of gonocoxa, with one seta. No paraapodemal lobe identifiable. Dorsal mesial margin of gonocoxa simple, with conspicuously strong setae on posterior half. Number of juxtagonostylar setae two, both flattened sabre-like megasetae arising from a common basal body, which is about half the length of the megasetae. Anteriorly from the juxtagonostylar megasetae there is a plate-like lobe bearing anteriorly a long megaseta. No other conspicuous setae on the dorsal side of gonocoxa. Otherwise the dorsal setae of gonocoxa similar to those on the ventral side. Gonostylus flat, subtriangular in lateral view, with a couple of setae at dorsal margin and ca. 10 setae at apical and apicoventral margin. Aedeagus narrowly subtriangular, without lateral shoulders, with slightly convex sides, the apex curved ventrad. Hypoproct extending posteriorly just over the base of gonostyli, the number of ventral setae (sternite 10) ca. 15 on each half. Cerci mesially separate.

Female. Unknown.

Discussion. The non-setose anterior basalare and laterotergite, the membranous parastylar lobe with one seta, tergite 9 fused laterally with the gonocoxa, the large flat gonostylus, the inconspicuous posterolateral lobe of the gonocoxa and the presence of a strong oblique megaseta anteriorly at the dorsal mesial margin of the gonocoxa make Monota iota similar to M. mexicapan Hippa & Huerta , M. planistylus , M. rectolobata and M. intermedia Jaschhof & Hippa. Manota iota is distinguished from all of these by lacking of a group of megasetae, which are, in the case of other species, arising from a curved lobe on the dorsal mesial margin of the gonocoxa anteriorly from the juxtagonostylar megasetae.

Etymology. Iota is the ninth letter of the Greek alphabet, used to refer to anything that is very small, such as this fly.
