Type species: Caryophyllia glabrescens Chamisso and Eysenhardt, 1821
Characters: Colonies are flabello-meandroid or phaceloid with corallites in long or short, laterally free series. Corallite walls are septothecal. Columellae are absent or very reduced. Polyps are large with elongate tentacles extended day and night.
