1. The genus Anopheles was last recorded from Malta (as A. maculipennis ) in 1943 ( Bernard 1945) and is presumed extinct. It is possible that this record actually refers to a sibling species in the A. maculipennis complex, A. labranchiae , which was recorded from Malta by Stojanovich & Scott (1997).
2. The generic classification of the Aedini follows Wilkerson et al. (2015).
3. This species has not been recorded since Zetterstedt (1850) and Bezzi & de Stefani-Perez (1897), and is presumed extinct.
4. Based on a single reference in the medical literature ( Gatt 1996). Although the species was widespread in the Mediterranean in the early part of the 20th century and could therefore have occurred in Malta, there is no compelling evidence that it did.
5. Recorded as its synonym C. fatigans Wiedemann, 1928 , which is a misidentification or misinterpretation ( Gatt 1996), as this is a tropical and subtropical species not known from the West Mediterranean.
