1. Records of Nyctia halterata (Panzer, 1798) or its synonym Megerlea caminaria (Meigen, 1826) are based on misidentifications and refer to this species.

2. More likely to be Sarcophila meridionalis Verves, 1982 or another closely related species (Pape pers. comm.), but retained pending revision of this closely related species complex.

3. Records of Blaesoxipha campestris (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1863) are in error and refer to this species.

4. Previously tentatively synonymised by Pape (2004a), synonymies accepted by Whitmore (2011).

5. Records of Sarcophaga haemorrhoides, Böttcher 1913 are based on misidentifications and refer to this species.

8. Records of Sarcophaga penicillata Villeneuve, 1907 were thought to refer to S. villeneuveana and reported as such in Gatt & Ebejer (2014). Subsequent revision of the single male in PG collection in preparation of this checklist has shown that this species is actually S. tetrix Whitmore, 2011 , a species which is very close to S. villeneuveana (Daniel Whitmore, pers. comm.). Two male specimens in the Natural History Museum London which were previously identified as S. villeneuveana by PG ( Gatt & Ebejer 2014) are also S. tetrix .

9. A record of this species is based on previous records of Sarcophaga exuberans auct. (in part) and S. misera auct. (in part), which are in turn based on misidentifications or misinterpretations. There is no compelling evidence that this species occurs in Malta, although it may.

10. Records of Sarcophaga exuberans auct. (in part), S. misera auct. (in part), and S. portschinskyi (Rohdendorf, 1937) are based on misidentifications and refer to this species.

11. Records of Sarcophaga carnaria (Linnaeus, 1758) and of S. variegata (Scopoli, 1763) , as their synonyms, respectively S. atropos Meigen, 1826 and S. agricola (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) , are based on misidentifications and refer to this species.
