Echimyine systematics has long been problematic, but the sustained efforts of several researchers have transformed our taxonomic understanding of this interesting radiation of arboreal caviomorphs (Emmons et al., 2015a; Fabre et al., 2017; Emmons and Fabre, 2018; Courcelle et al., 2019). Five species of echimyines (one each of Dactylomys , Isothrix , Makalata , Mesomys , and Toromys ) are known to be present in the Yavarí-Ucayali interfluve.
