Derivation of name. From sanguis (Latin= blood) for the bright red dorsal coloration.

Diagnosis. This species belongs in group 4b ( Uhmann 1937) and is most similar to S. minuta Staines. It can be distinguished by the bright red color, by antennomeres IIX being cylindrical, and by the 12 rows of punctures on each elytron.

Description. Antennae, head, scutellum, and legs, except base of femora, black; pronotum bright red with medial black vitta and black lateral margins; elytra bright red; pro, meso, and metasterna yellowish medially, black laterally; abdominal sterna black. Head: medial sulcus present; row of punctures present along inner margin of each eye; vertex alutaceous; triangular projection present between antennal bases; frons smooth, yellowish. Antenna: antennomere I subglobose, shorter than II; IIV cylindrical, III as long as I & II combined, IVV decreasing in length; VI cylindrical, length of V; VIIX cylindrical, subequal in length, each longer than VI; XI elongate, rounded at apex; IVII with scattered setae; VIIIXI setose. Pronotum: convex; lateral margin sinuate, distinctly angulate just behind middle; each anterior angle with rounded tooth; posterior angle acute; densely punctate except near anterior margin; punctures on disc smaller; medial callus present; pronotal length 0.9 mm; pronotal width 1.0 mm. Scutellum: quadrate; micropunctate.

Elytron: lateral margin sinuate, smooth; exterior apical angle rounded; apical margin laminate, smooth; apices emarginate; sutural angle with distinct tooth; humerus slightly produced, rounded; 12 rows of punctures; interspaces 2, 4, & 8 costate, 8 most pronounced, 2 & 4 more pronounced apically; elytral length 4.2 mm; elytral width 1.6 mm. Venter: pro and mesosterna punctate; metasternum with few punctures medially at base; 5 visible abdominal sterna. Total length: 5.5 mm.

Variation. Specimens vary in pronotal length from 0.91.0 mm, in pronotal width from 1.0 1.1 mm, in elytral length from 4.14.6 mm, in elytral width from 1.41.7 mm, and in total length from 5.35.9 mm. The color and sculpture is very similar to that of the holotype.
