Family CANDONIDAE Kaufmann View in CoL

Subfamily CYCLOCYPRIDINAE Kaufmann

Genus Namiotkocypria gen. nov.

Material examined

Type material. Holotype, adult male dissected in lactophenol solution and sealed with translucent nail polish; one valve kept in a micropalaeontological cavity slide (OK-TX-AW008-01). Collected from San Marcos artesian well (SMAW), Hays County, Texas, USA (97.936°N, 29.889°W; ~ 177 m above sea level) by Benjamin F. Schwartz and Benjamin T. Hutchins on 25 February 2013 . Allotype, adult female, soft body parts dissected in lactaphenol solution and sealed slide (OK-TX-AW008-02). Paratypes, one male (OK-TX-AW005-03) and one female (OK-TX-AW005-04) dissected in lactaphenol solution and sealed in slides, and the remaining valves kept in micropalaeontological slides. Non-dissected paratypes, 40 individuals (10 females, 6 males and 24 juveniles) collected from the type locality and kept in 70% ethanol, deposited at the Abant İzzet Baysal University , Department of Biology, Subdivision of Hydrobiology (Bolu, Turkey) (OK-TX-AW005-53) . 39 individuals (13 females, 5 males and 21 juveniles) kept in Freeman Aquatic Research Center , Department of Biology, Texas State University (Texas, USA) .

Diagnosis

Adult valves medium sized, subrectangular to trapezoidal in shape ( Figure 2a–h View Figure 2 ) with smooth surface and normal pore canals ( Figure 3a–d View Figure 3 ). LV overlaps RV on all sides. Hinge adont. Pustules absent on the margins of the valves ( Figure 3e–f View Figure 3 ). Valves inclined posterodorsally. In internal view, left valve with a strong tooth antero-ventrally ( Figure 2b View Figure 2 ). Calcified inner lamella broader in posterior (ca. 13% of the valve) end than anterior (ca. 10% of the valve; Figure 2g,h View Figure 2 ). Selvage reduced. Inner list reduced. A1 seven-segmented (including protopodite) with a very short Rome organ ( Figure 4a View Figure 4 ). A2 five-segmented in males, t2 and t3 setae transformed into sexual bristles ( Figure 4b View Figure 4 ). G1–G3 claws present on A2, z1–z3 setae claw like, z2 and z3 reaching tips of terminal claws. Six short swimming setae present, the sixth seta extending almost half the length of the segment while the others extend nearly to penultimate segment. Exopodial plate with one long and two minute setae ( Figure 4c View Figure 4 ). Terminal segment of Md-palp rectangular, about 2 times longer than wide, gamma seta smooth ( Figure 5a View Figure 5 ), coxa well developed ( Figure 5b View Figure 5 ). Terminal segment of Mxl palp almost square ( Figure 5c View Figure 5 ). T 1 in males with five to six setae on vibratory plate ( Figure 5d–F View Figure 5 ). Clasping organs asymmetrical and two-segmented. Basal seta on T2 absent ( Figure 5g View Figure 5 ). Three basal setae (d1, d2, dp) present on T3 ( Figure 6a View Figure 6 ). Setae e absent, seta g reduced, and seta f short. Setae on terminal segment of T3 unequal in length; h3> h1> h2.

Rake-like organ small ( Figure 6c View Figure 6 ). UR with two well-developed claws and setae ( Figure 6b View Figure 6 ). Hemipenis with two lobes; lobe b shorter than lobe a ( Figure 6e View Figure 6 ). Zenker organ with 5 + 2 whorls of spines ( Figure 6d View Figure 6 ). Genital field rounded without appendages ( Figure 6f View Figure 6 ).
