Type material. Holotype: NHMW 2021 View Materials /0148/0002, SL: 45.3 mm, MD: 15.9 mm, Nemeşeşti ( Romania), illustrated in Hoernes & Auinger (1891, pl. 47, figs 12a–c), figs 42C 1 –C 3, 4Z.
Type locality. Nemeşeşti ( Romania), Făget Basin .
Type stratum. Silt and clay of the Dej Formation.
Age. Middle Miocene, early/middle Badenian (Langhian).
Etymology. In honor of Alfréd Dulai (Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest), in recognition of his contributions to the paleontology of the Paratethys Sea.
Diagnosis. Moderately large, moderately broad fusiform with high last whorl and conical spire of weakly concave later flat-sided whorls. Narrow, carinate subsutural collar on last whorl. Almost flat subsutural ramp. Inflated mid-whorl with shoulder and ramp poorly delimited. Long siphonal canal. Spiral sculpture prominent only over base and fasciole.
Description. Shell moderately large, moderately broad fusiform with high last whorl and conical spire; apical angle 35°. Protoconch not preserved. Teleoconch of at least eight whorls. Early teleoconch whorls with narrow subsutural cord, beaded suprasutural cord, broad concave mid-portion bearing fine cords. On third whorl suprasutural cord of beads disappears, entirely obscured by succeeding whorl. Abapically subsutural collar remains narrow, weakly carinate, poorly delimited. Mid-whorl portion becomes less concave, straight-sided on penultimate whorl. Suture narrowly impressed, superficial, linear. Entire surface covered by fine cords. Suture narrowly impressed, linear. Last whorl 70% of total height. Subsutural collar narrow, carinate. Subsutural ramp broad, almost flat-sided. Shoulder poorly-delimited, rounded; mid-whorl inflated. Base weakly angled, strongly constricted. Siphonal fasciole poorly developed, weakly rounded. Sculpture of spiral threads over collar and ramp, mid-whorl smooth, narrow cords of alternating strength appearing on base and fasciole. Aperture moderately narrow, pyriform. Outer lip not thickened, smooth within. Anal sinus moderately wide and deep, asymmetrically U-shaped, with apex mid-ramp. Siphonal canal long, moderately wide, straight, shallowly notched at tip. Columella straight, smooth. Columellar and parietal callus thin, adherent.
Discussion. This species was identified by Hoernes & Auinger (1891) as Perrona borsoni (de Basterot, 1825) , originally described from the early Miocene of France (de Basterot 1825: 64, pl. 3 fig. 2). Perrona borsoni is currently treated as subjective junior synonym of Tomellana semimarginata ( Lamarck, 1822) ( Lozouet et al. 2001) , and differs from the Paratethyan species in its opisthocline axial riblets on the early teleoconch whorls ( Lozouet 2017, pl. 33, fig. 6), the higher spire and the rounded and less prominent subsutural collar. Perrona burdigalensis ( Peyrot, 1931) , from the early Miocene of France, is slightly reminiscent of Tomellana dulaii nov. sp., but its subsutural collar is even more strongly carinate, and it has a much higher spire (see Peyrot 1931, pl. 6, figs 30–31) (early teleoconch whorls of a specimen in the RGM collection place this species in Perrona ). Tomellana dulaii is close to Tomellana jouannetii ( Des Moulins, 1842) in general shape and sculpture, but the French early Miocene species has a convex subsutural collar and a higher spire (see Peyrot 1931, pl. 8, figs 43, 61, 62, 66, 71).
A specimen from the Badenian of Borsodbóta ( Hungary) described by Csepreghy-Meznerics (1969; 1972) might represent this species as well, but has an even wider apical angle and a shorter siphonal canal, which might be incomplete.
Paleoenvironment. Inner neritic environments based on the assemblage from Nemeșești ( Romania) (own data).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (middle Miocene):? Bükk Mountains: Borsodbóta ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1969, 1972); Făget Basin: Nemeșești ( Romania) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1891).
