Genus diagnosis. Antenna 1, callynophore weak or absent in females and with 1 or 2 fields in males. Antenna 2 in males, article 4 of peduncle not enlarged. Epistome not produced; upper lip produced. Mandible with a hump on the medioposterior margin; lacinia mobilis long and slender; molar setose, with distal triturative surface vestigial, palp attached proximal to molar. Maxilla 1, outer plate with ST7 right and left asymmetrical, STA-D medially cuspidate or apically bifid; palp apically serrate. Gnathopod 1 simple. Pereopods 3–4 in males, merus and carpus with plumose setae along the posterior margin. Uropod 3, peduncle small or long, with lateral flange; peduncle and rami in males without plumose setae; outer ramus 1 or 2-articulate. Telson entire ( Lowry & Stoddart, 1997).

Composition of the genus. The genus Lysianopsis contains five species: L. alba Holmes, 1903 ; L. concavus Senna, 2007 ; L. hummelincki (Stephensen, 1933) ; L. ozona Lowry & Stoddart, 1997 ; and L. subantarctica (Schellenberg, 1931) .
