Material examined. 2 specimens (38.9–41.4 mm SL): MNRJ 30140, 1(41.4 mm), E-0506; MNRJ 30144, 1(38.9 mm); E-0512.
Diagnosis. Argyropelecus sladeni can be differentiated from its congeners by the following combination of characters: dorsal blade low, its height less than half the width of its base; post-abdominal spine small and subsymmetrical; scales below the SC photophores without spines; upper preopercular spine long, reaching a region posterior to bony edge of preopercle, usually dorsally directed (never ventrally); lower maxillary teeth small and uniform in size.
Meristic description. Fin rays: D 9; A 12; P1 11. Gill rakers: 18–19 (7+2+9–10). Photophores: BR 6; I 6; AB 12; SAB 6; PAN 4; AN 6; SC 4.
Distribution. Worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters.
