Sphingonotus taiwanensis sp. nov.

Holotype: ♂, Eboshi , Taiwan, China, 14 VIII,1938. Female unknown.

Male Body medium to larger in size. Head short, shorter than pronotum. Fastigial foveolae triangle. Vertex evidently sloping forward in profile, frons near vertical. Frontal ridge flat, apical part narrow slightly. Eye ellipse, vertical diameter 1.5 times horizontal diameter. Antennae filiform, 24 segmented. Median keel of pronotum cut by three transverse sulci, hind transverse sulcus placed before middle part, metazona 2 times prozona in length. Anterior margin of pronotum protruding in the middle, hind margin obtuse angle. Interspace of mesosternum wider, width 1.8 times its length. Tegmen narrow and long, reaching the end of hind tibiae, length 5.5 times its width, intercalary vein of discoidal area nearly straight, finely serrated, anterior part of discoidal area without parallel transverse veinlets, sparsely reticulated. Main longitudinal veins of hindwing normal, third anal lobe without additional longitudinal vein. Hind femur robust, dorsal carina smooth, not serrated, length 3.6 times its maximum width. Hind tibia shorter than femur, with 10 spines on outer side and 13 spines on inner side, spur of inner side normal, not longer than half of the first tarsus. Arolium of hind tarsus small, not reaching the middle of claw. Tympanic flap large, covering over 2/3 of tympanic cavity. Cercus long conical, extending over the end of epiproct. Subgenital plate short conical. Phallic complex and epiphallus as showing in fig.7 and fig.8.

Body grey brown. Tegmen dark at basal half part and apical part light, R vein dark, with four branches distinctly. Hind wing pale yellow at base, black stripe wider in the middle, reaching the hind margin of wing, its width nearly equal, basal part narrow, the apical part of wing transparent. Hind femur pale red on inner side, with a dark band upper side, a grey brown band on pre-knee, lower margin of knee lobe straight. Hind tibia pale red. Hind tarsus yellowish brown.

Length of body: ♂ 25.6 mm. Length of tegmen: ♂ 28.8 mm. Length of hind femur: ♂ 15.4 mm.

Female unknown.

The new species Sphingonotus taiwanensis sp. nov. is similar to Sphingonotus nebulosus (Fiescher-Waldheim, 1846) . The major differences are listed in Table 1 View TABLE 1 .
