The members of this genus are mostly strikingly bicoloured and with complex body structure. The genus Neohydatothrips can be distinguished from other genera of Sericothripinae by the available keys ( Mound & Tree 2009; Lima & Mound 2016a & b). The genus Neohydatothrips is characterized by the anterior margin of the metasternal plate being transverse or with a shallow emargination medially ( Lima & Mound 2016a & b).
