Diagnosis. Wing length 1.6–2.0 mm. Fronto-orbital plate predominantly yellowish, brown to upper fronto-orbital seta; face predominantly brown, yellowish below medial point; legs black; calypter greyish with margin black; fringe black. Aedeagus (Fig. 930 and 931 in Spencer & Steyskal 1986): basiphallus slightly sclerotized; mesophallus short and cup-like; triangular sclerite present between mesophallus and distiphallus; distiphallus forming two short tubules with a pair of distolateral extensions.

Britton ex Small , Malvastrum coromandelianum (L.) Garcke, Sida acuta Burm. f., Sida cordiofolia L., Sida rhombifolia L., Sida spinosa L., Sphaeralcea coulteri (S. Watson) A. Grey , Urena lobata L.
Distribution. Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Jamaica, Peru, USA, Venezuela.

Comments. Calycomyza malvae is a polyphagous species, associated with several host-plants of the family Malvaceae ( Benavent-Corai et al. 2005; Eiseman & Lonsdale 2018). Larvae form linear mines on the surface of the leaf. Adults of this species are similar to C. sidae Spencer but are differentiated by the narrower mesophallus and membranous extension on the distiphallus.
