Shiny black with tegmina brownish hyline apically. Fore and middle legs yellowish variably tinged with brown, hind legs mainly dark brown.
Length. Female: 4.6mm
Type material examined. INDIA: lectotype ♀ P. noctua (here designated): ‘Type H.T.’ ‘ Penthimia noctua Dist. Type [hw]’ ‘Darjiling, Himalaya, Railway, 1600ft, 23.iv.15 ’,‘Distant coll. 1911-383’ (BMNH).
Remarks. This species was described from an unknown number of specimens (syntypic) with the following data: ‘Darjiling.’ The identity and therefore validity of the species (known only from the female) is uncertain. It is similar to several species all predominantly black with the apical area of the forewing paler and with a relatively slender body (see under P. curvata ).
