Agrotera Schrank, 1802: 163 View in CoL . Type species: Phalaena nemoralis Scopoli, 1763 , by monotypy.

Diagnosis. Most desbribed species of Agrotera share a similar forewing pattern, but their genitalia are diverse. The genus can be recognized by the third segment of the labial palpus triangularly shaped on the ventral surface, and a large notch on the junction between the 2 nd and 3 rd segments formed by having rather short scales; the basal part of the sub-triangular forewing always yellow or yellowish white mixed with orange scales, edged by the antemedial line terminally, often with a black or dark grey spot near the base of the costal margin; the basal part of the fanshaped hindwing yellow or yellowish white; abdomen yellowish or yellowish white at base dorsally; male genitalia with a divided or undivided, distally pointed valva, a slender hook-shaped clasper usually arising from below the base of the costa (sometimes T-shaped as in A. robustispina sp. nov.), and juxta bifid distally; female genitalia with ductus seminalis usually originating from posterior end of the corpus bursae.
