Type species. Penicula crista Evans, 1955 View in CoL .
Definition. A sister genus to Vettius Godman, [1901] View in CoL (type species Papilio phyllus Cramer, 1777 ) and far removed from Penicula Evans, 1955 View in CoL (type species Pamphila bryanti Weeks, 1906 ) ( Fig. 11–12 View Figure 11 View Figure 12 ), where these species were placed previously due to the characteristic tuft of hair-like scales in the discal area of hindwing above, apparently a convergent feature different in details between them. Keys to L.10.2a in Evans (1955). Distinguished from its relatives (including Penicula View in CoL ) by the structure of its dorsal hindwing area with the tuft of scales: the dense (not thin) tuft from upper part of discal cell at its base, covering gray (not black) area by the thickened bases of veins CuA 2 and CuA 2 (not reaching vein 1A+2A). No hyaline spots in forewing cell M 2 -M 3. In DNA, a combination of the following base pairs is diagnostic: aly2041.22.2:G133A, aly563.7.2:A292G, aly208.38.3:A886T, aly536.2.4:A94A (not T), aly3721.1.24:A167A (not G), aly3721.1.24:A169A (not C).
Etymology. The name is a feminine noun in the nominative singular, and it denotes that three species in the genus have “crist” in their names.
Species included. The type species, Penicula cristina Evans, 1955 , Cobalus cristatus Bell, 1930 , Penicula roppai Mielke, 1980 , and Rinthon [sic] advena Draudt, 1923 .
Parent taxon. Subtribe Moncina A. Warren, 2008.
