DESCRIPTION.

MALE. Measurements: length: 10–12 mm, width: 5.5–7 mm.

Body: laterally slightly convex, elytra almost parallel, bent; brownish-yellow except head, mouthparts, tarsi, protibia and metatibia deep brown to black; pronotum with a median blackish patch (absent on some specimens), elytra with a large median blackish band, slightly wider at base; shiny, with greenish metallic reflections on basal part of head, on pronotal patch and on blackish band of elytra.

Head: clypeus rounded and totally reflexed, imbricate-punctate, vertex less punctate but more deeply between eyes, separate transversal elongate foveolate punctures near eye margins, rounded on median part. Antennae with 9 antennomeres, with club longer than funicle.

Thorax: pronotum rectangular, wider than long; sides angular in middle; all margins with complete marginal line; anterior angles slightly projecting and reaching posterior margin of eyes; with relatively deep separate, small rounded punctures, more closely on sides; scutellar shield semicircular, more densely punctate, punctures larger.

Elytra: longer than wide, wider in middle part; epipleura complete; regularly striate-sulcate; primary costae more convex than interstices; interstices with small isolated rounded punctures and microreticulate; striae with close horseshoe-shaped punctures; humeral calli marked, apical calli slightly marked.

Pygidium: triangular, apex rounded, marginated along anal plate, tumid, slightly projecting posteroventrally and slightly surpassing apex of elytra; punctate-reticulate on disc, transversal and more elongate on lateral sides.

Venter: lateral part of metaventrite with close horseshoe-shaped punctures, median part with small horseshoe-shaped punctures; 2nd to 6th abdominal ventrites with transversal deep horseshoe-shaped punctures.

Legs: protibiae bidentate, inner claw relatively elongate, wide, flattened and cleft, strongly sinuate at base, one third shorter than last tarsomere; mesotarsal outer claw cleft; outer claw of metatarsus slightly longer than inner one and uncleft.

Setation: dorsal side almost glabrous except isolated yellowish setae on antennae; short and long decumbent or erected brownish setae inserted in setigerous punctures on inner part of legs; underside with relatively long erected yellowish setae on sides of metaventrite; long erected, isolated, yellowish setae along margin of anal plate; close and longer on anterior and posterior margins of prosternum; abdominal ventrites with lines of long decumbent brownish-yellow setae inserted in setigerous punctures; some yellowish erected setae on sides of pygidium.

Aedeagus: in lateral view, parameres rather short and ventrally rounded; in dorsal view almost triangular with apico-external angle rounded; apex almost straight and sinuate in the middle; in ventral view, apex of median lobe triangular, curved and strongly sclerotized.

FEMALE: Measurements: length: 10.5–12 mm, width: 6.5–7 mm.

Differs from ♂ by: larger body, laterally more convex, with a strong enlargement in the basal part and abdomen convex; club of antennae slightly shorter; protibiae narrower with apical tooth rounded and longer; large claw of protibia not modified.

DERIVATIO NOMINIS.

Dedicated to the Soviet Navy Officer Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov (1926-1998), credited with preventing a Soviet nuclear strike during the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962).

DISTRIBUTION.

Known from Kenya and Tanzania.

BIOLOGY.

The species was collected in the months of February, March, April, May, November and December.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS.

A. arkhipovi sp. nov. strongly resembles A. dorsata Fahraeus, 1857 but can be distinguished as follows:

A. arkhipovi sp. nov. ( Fig. 1 View Fig ) Aedeagus: in dorsal view, apex of parameres almost straight and sinuate in the middle; in ventral view, apex of median lobe triangular, curved and strongly sclerotized.

Protibia: bidentate.

Aedeagus: in dorsal view, apex of parameres rounded and sinuate in the middle; in ventral view, apex of median lobe almost straight or slightly rounded, not curved and not sclerotized.
