Diagnosis. Distinguished by the following combination of characters: coloration of head, antenna, pronotum, scutellum, inner margin of hemelytron, and legs variable from uniformly pale to darkened ( Figs. 26–33 View FIGURES 26 – 33 , 47–50 View FIGURES 46 – 57 ), relatively long first antennal segment, 0.45–0.6 × as long as width of head; right paramere with strongly tapering apex (Figs. 122-132). Clearly differs from all other species of the subgenus in the length of first antennal segment and long body. Apparently not separable from P. c o n c i i (see relevant discussion).
Description. Male. Middle-sized, 4.6–5.9. COLORATION. Variable from uniformly pale to darkened head, antennae, pronotum, scutellum, inner margin of hemelytron, and legs. Head: first and second antennal segments yellow, third and fourth segments somewhat darkened; in dark forms all antennal segments brown. Thorax: pronotum, exposed part of mesonotum and scutellum green or yellow in pale forms and brown in dark forms; scuto-scutellar suture brown; pronotal sides, meso- and metapleura yellow. Hemelytron: green or greenish yellow; in dark forms brown or dark green along midline; membrane more or less darkened. Legs: yellow, apical part of third segment dark brown. Abdomen: yellow, sometimes partly brown dorsally. SURFACE AND VESTITURE. Mesial stiff setae on first antennal segment present; antenna with pale to brown simple setae. STRUCTURE. Head: vertex 2.11–2.63 × as wide as eye; first antennal segment 0.45–0.6 × as long as width of head; second antennal segment 1.58–1.83 × as long as width of head and 1.24–1.64 × as long as width of pronotum. Thorax: pronotum with slightly concave margins, 1.70–2.08 × as wide as long and 1.05–1.33 × as wide as head. Hemelytron: cuneus twice as long as wide. Legs: third tarsal segment nearly equal in length to first and second combined; pulvillus relatively long and reaching midpoint of claw (197–198). GENITALIA. Genital segment as in Fig. 80 View FIGURES 80 – 84 ; left paramere as in Figs. 89–91; right paramere strongly tapering (Figs. 122–132).
Female. Middle-sized, 3.9–4.7. COLORATION, SURFACE, AND VESTITURE. As in male. STRUCTURE. Similar to male except larger interocular distance, vertex 3.0–3.38 × as wide as eye; first antennal segment 0.41– 0.53 × as long as width of head; second antennal segment 1.43–1.66 × as long as width of head and 1.26–1.58 × as long as width of pronotum; pronotum 1.87–2.23 × as wide as long and 1.02–1.17 × as wide as head. GENITALIA. Interramal lobes as in Figs. 175–176 View FIGURES 175 – 181 , 184 View FIGURES 182 – 187 ; sclerotized rings with strongly protruded and tapering inner distal angle ( Fig. 163 View FIGURES 162 – 168 ).
Distribution. Distributed in the highlands of the northwestern Mediterranean region, from Catalonia, Spain on the west to western Bulgaria on the east (Fig. 59).
Host associations. Genista radiata (L.) Scopoli ( Reuter 1902), Genista florida L. ( Ribes 1978), Genista scorpius (L.) de Candolle ( Ribes 1984), Cytisus balansae (Boissier) Ball (= Genista purgans (L.) de Candole), and Sarothamnus sp. ( Wagner 1974). P. longicornis has been recorded from Cytisus balansae ( Wagner 1955; Ribes 1984). P. rumelicus has been recorded from Genista lydia Boissier (= Genista rumelica ) ( Josifov & Simov 2006).
Discussion. Reuter (1883) described P. metriorrhynchus based on several female specimens from southern France. Later ( Reuter 1902), he described males. Wagner (1955) described P. longicornis from southern France and distinguished this species from P. metriorrhynchus by the darker coloration, longer body and appendages. From then, many specimens of both species were collected across southern Europe with area of sympatry in France and Spain. Later, Simov (Josifov & Simov 2006) described P. r u m e l i c u s from Mt. Rila in Bulgaria. He stated that the structure of the genital capsule of the new species was different from that of P. m e t r i o r rh y n c h u s. During our examination of all available material including type series, we failed to observe any differences between P. metriorrhynchus , P. longicornis , and P. rumelicus . The structures of the genital capsule and right paramere do not provide any useful characters (compare Figs. 122–126 for specimens originally determined as P. metriorrhynchus , Figs. 127–131 for P. longicornis sensu Wagner , and Fig. 132 for P. r u m e l i c u s sensu Simov). Coloration of appendages, head, and mesonotum could vary from dark brown to pale yellow (compare Figs. 26–33 View FIGURES 26 – 33 ). Length of the first antennal segment as well as the body size is widely overlapping (see Table 1). Distributional patterns of all three species are rather similar. Thus we propose the synonymy of P. longicornis Wagner, 1955 and P. rumelicus Simov, 2006 with P. metriorrhynchus Reuter, 1883 .
