Aphis pallipes Hartig, 1841 View in CoL
Aphis pallipes Hartig, 1841: 369 View in CoL . HOLOTYPE: (519 [7.08]), Fagus sylvatica View in CoL .
Schizodryobius pallipes ( Hartig, 1841) View in CoL (change of combination—Börner, 1952: 46).
Lachnus pallipes ( Hartig, 1841) View in CoL (change of combination— Szelegiewicz, 1962: 73). Valid
Specimens. A single pinned alate (519) collected in Tiergarten , Berlin, Germany, on May 24, 1836 .
Remarks. Hartig (1841) indicated that this species is from Fagus sylvatica (“Rothbucke”), but the host is recorded only as “ Fagus ” in Hartig’s notes. While the specimen is consistent with Hartig’s (1841) description, it does not agree with the current use of the name Lachnus pallipes ( Hartig, 1841) . As was the case for Hartig’s A. pilicornis holotype, the specimen may instead be a Periphyllus species from an accidental host. Szelegiewicz (1962) appears to be the first authority to treat this species within the genus Lachnus though apparently without justification. Previously it had been treated in the genus Schizodryobius van der Goot, 1913 by Börner (1952) which is now recognized as a synonym of Lachnus ( Eastop & Hille Ris Lambers 1976) . Since the name L. pallipes is well established in the literature with recent re-descriptions of the sexual morphs and a neotype designation ( Mróz et al. 2015), the case will be referred to the ICZN once the identity of the holotype is determined with the recommendation that it uses its plenary power to set aside the existing name-bearing type in accordance with Article 75.6.
