Type locality. “ Calabrie ”, Italy .

Material examined. Lectotype by present designation ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–13 ), female, MZFN: new box, labelled: “ Tomoxia bucephala n. Calabria. [original Costa’s label] | LECTOTYPUS Tomoxia bucephala Costa, 1854 D. Selnekovič des. 2019 [red label]”; pinned in left elytron; right metatarsus and left metatarsomeres 2–4 missing . Additional specimens in the series: 1 female, MZFN: new box, labelled: “ Tomoxia bucephala Costa, 1854 D. Selnekovič det. 2019” .

Current status. Junior subjective synonym of Mordella biguttata Gyllenhal, 1827 (nec Rossi, 1794); valid name.

Remarks. The lectotype corresponds to the current interpretation of the species. Genus Tomoxia was described on page eight of Costa (1853) with a date of publication 1 December 1853. Description of the species starts on page eight published on 1 December 1853 and continues on page nine published in 1854 (without specification of the day and month; Costa 1853 –1854; Bosquet 2016). We maintain 1854 as the year of publication in the name of the species as it was the first date when the full description became available.
