Type: — VENEZUELA. “Crescit in ripa Orinoci, prope Maypures,” undated, A.J.A. Bonpland & F.W.H.A. von Humboldt s.n. (holotype: P 00660097 digital image!)

Subshrub 70 cm high; branches puberulous; internodal stem wings absent. Leaves 3-foliolate, digitate, petioles 1.5–3 cm long; leaflets oblanceolate or linear, 2.5–6.5 × 0.3–1 cm, pubescent above and glabrous beneath; stipules 1–2 mm long, linear, caducous. Inflorescence a raceme, 8–23 cm long, terminal, lax; peduncles 3–4.5 cm long. Flowers 5–11, pedicels 4–8 mm long; bracts 1–4 mm long, subulate, straight, early caducous; bracteoles 3mm long, subulate, caducous; calyx 7–12 mm long, lobes twice or three times as long as the tube, pubescent; corolla yellow; the standard petal 1.3–1.7 × 1.2–1.6 cm, appendages extending to the claw; wing petals 1.5–1.7 cm long; keel petals 1.6–1.7 cm long, lanate on the upper margin, untwisted; ovary 5 mm long, stipitate; style curved. Legumes 2.8–3.5 × 0.7–1.3 cm, cylindrical, puberulous, brown at maturity, ca. 20-seeded; seeds 4–5 × 3 mm, seed coat brown.

Distribution and Ecology: — Crotalaria maypurensis is native to Central and South America, known from México, Colombia, British Guiana, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina ( Cuello 1999). It is widely distributed in Brazil, occurring mainly in cerrado areas.
