Type: — SOUTH AFRICA. Natal : “in Graminosis humidis inter fluvios Omsamculo et Omcomas, alt. 400 ft,” undated, Drége s.n. (holotype: K 000227334 digital image!; isotype: P 00367955 digital image!)
Shrub or subshrub 1–1.5 m high; branches puberulous; internodal stem wings absent. Leaves 3-foliolate, digitate, petioles 2–5 cm long; leaflets linear- elliptic to lanceolate, 4.5–9 × 0.4–1.2 cm, pubescent above and glabrous beneath; stipules absent. Inflorescence a raceme, 7–33 cm long, terminal; peduncles 2–7 cm long. Flowers 20–25, pedicels 5 mm long; bracts 1 mm long, lanceolate, persistent; bracteoles subulate, inconspicous, persistent; calyx 3–4 mm long, lobes shorter than or of same length of the tube, puberulous; corolla yellow, veined reddish brown; the standard petal 0.8–1 × 0.7–0.8 cm; wing petals 0.9–1 cm long; keel petals 0.8 cm long, untwisted; ovary 6 mm long, stipitate; style curved. Legumes 2.8–3.4 × 0.4–0.8 cm, narrowly cylindrical, curved at the apex, puberulous, brown or black at maturity, ca. 30-seeded; seeds 2 × 2 mm, seed coat orange or red.
Distribution and Ecology: — Crotalaria lanceolata is an African species occurring in disturbed areas or cultivated throughout Brazil.
