Distribution of Wiedemannia View in CoL in the Balkan Peninsula
The genus Wiedemannia is widely distributed across Europe with 31 species, including the new species described here known from the Balkans. Of these 31 species, 9 species ( W. (C.) ariadne , W. artemisa Ivković & Plant , W. (P.) kacanskae Horvat, W. (PW.) microstigma (Bezzi) , W. (W.) balkanica Wagner, W. (W.) dinarica Engel, W. (W.) dyonysica Wagner, W. (W.) graeca Vaillant & Wagner, W. (W.) kroatica Wagner ) are strictly confined to Balkan Peninsula ( Wagner 1981, 1995; Chvála & Wagner 1989; Vaillant & Wagner 1990; Horvat 1993, 1995a, 1995b, 1997; Ivković & Horvat 2007; Yang et al. 2007; Ivković et al. 2010). Some are very local, e.g., W. (W.) kroatica is found only on the Kupa River and its tributaries ( Wagner 1981; Ivković unpubl. data). Other species, such as W. (W.) ariadne and W. (W.) dinarica are widely distributed all across the Dinarid mountains to Greece ( Wagner 1981; Horvat 1993, 1995a, 1995b; Ivković & Horvat 2007). Of all the Balkan countries, only Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia have been explored in detail ( Horvat 1993, 1995, 1997; Ivković & Horvat 2007; Ivković et al. 2010). Currently 17 species are known from Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, mostly present in the Dinarid, karstic mountain region of these countries ( Wagner 1981; Horvat 1993; Ivković & Horvat 2007; Ivković et al. 2010; Ivković unpubl. data). A full understanding of the species of Wiedemannia inhabiting the Balkan Peninsula awaits detailed studies in these other countries.
