Dasymutilla phaon fimbrialis Mickel
Dasymutilla phaon fimbrialis Mickel, 1928 . U. S. Nat. Mus. Bull. 143:302. Holotype male, Utah (No. 40757) [USNM] (examined).
Diagnosis of Male. The male of this subspecies also has the antennal scrobe carinate dorsally. The tegula is not setigerously punctate. It lacks a pit filled with setae on sternum II, but possesses an apical fringe of setae on the pygidium. The integument is entirely black. The dorsum of the head, mesosoma, and metasoma are concolorous, clothed with red setae.
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. USA (Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah); Mexico (Baja California Norte).
Remarks. Like D. phaon , this subspecies is known only from the male. It does not key out particularly well. It is similar in appearance to D. loreto and D. veracruz . However, it is much larger than either of those species. Like D. phaon , this subspecies is moderately common. Approximately 50 specimens have been examined.
