The species was recently transferred to Fidicinoides ( Sanborn et al. 2008) .

It has been reported from Brazil, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels and van der Laan 1985; Salazar Escobar 2005). The species has been incorrectly synonymized with F. passerculus but is a valid taxon ( Sanborn et al. 2008). The two species may overlap their distributions in Colombia but F. spinicosta extends northward from Colombia while F. passerculus extends eastward and southward from Colombia. It has been reported from Caldas, Samaná-Río la Miel ( Salazar Escobar 2005).
