Distribution. NEOTROPICAL. Brazil (Amapá, Amazonas, Ceará, Espírito Santo *, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul *, Minas Gerais, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo), Ecuador, Guyana.
Biology. This species has been collected using various baits such as human feces, chicken viscera, mouse and rat carcasses, pig carcasses, fish, and banana mixed with brown sugar ( Lopes 1975a; Dias et al. 1984c; Moretti et al. 2008; Rosa et al. 2011; Vairo et al. 2014; Faria et al. 2018; Paseto et al. 2019). Human feces and mouse and rat carcasses have been used to rear this species under natural conditions ( Lopes 1973b; Moretti et al. 2008). In the laboratory, O. carvalhoi has been reared on agar plus powdered milk, developing from first instar to adult in 14–17 days ( Lopes 1973b). The species has been reported from the Brazilian Cerrado ( Rosa et al. 2011; Faria et al. 2018), humid tropical rainforest ( Vairo et al. 2014), secondary forest ( Moretti et al. 2008), mesophytic semi-deciduous forest and pasture ( Paseto et al. 2019) and urban areas (Souza, unpublished).
