Diagnosis: Habitus as in Fig. 35. Male terminalia: Ventrite VII ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 8–13 ) oval, spiculum gastrale long, relatively wide and straight, firmly attached to ventrite. Terminal tergite ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 2–7 ) trapezoidal. Female terminalia: Gonocoxite ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 21–26 ) transverse, with outer plate symmetrical; inner plate symmetrical, with a elongate impression, divided in two portions. Last tergite transverse, with a distal row of stout, small setae ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 21–26 ). Male genitalia as in Figs. 36–37 View FIGURES 36–39 . Spermatheca: C-shaped in lateral view; spermathecal duct curved ( Figs. 54–55 View FIGURES 45–55 ), long and narrow for entire length. For a detailed external description see Perkins (1980: 172).

Distribution: Currently only known from Cuba ( Perkins 1980). Hydraena perkinsi is the most widespread and common species of Hydraena in eastern Cuba ( Fig. 58 View FIGURES 56–58 ).
Habitat: This species occurs in a wide range of habitats, from well preserved streams ( Fig. 63 View FIGURES 62–64 ) to temporary pools with moderately polluted waters ( Fig. 60 View FIGURES 59–61 ). This successful species favours margins of lowland habitats with clear water, muddy bottom and high exposure to the sun. In one locality (San Miguel de Parada) the water temperature reached 36ºC at midday.
