Genus Lepidostoma Rambur 1842 View in CoL
Type species: Lepidostoma squamulosum Rambur 1842: 493 –494 (designated by Ross 1944).
Descriptions. Spurs 2, 4, 4. Male antennae each with scape long, armed generally with distinct processes at its base, bearing large, unique, highly modified setae in certain species; however, these processes rudimentary, or absolutely wanting in some species, such that antennae cylindrical, simple. Maxillary palpi each 2 segmented, 1st segment sometimes with extra apical or mesal lobes and 2nd segment often spatulate or lobiform, flexible and quite variable in length. Wings covered with a mixture of highly variable hairs and scales. Neuration irregular in forewings and generally regular in hind wings; forewings each usually with postcubital fold more than half as long as wing. Forks I, II present; presence of III, IV and V variable. Discoidal and thyridial cells varying in length. Hind wing venation usually not highly modified. In male genitalia, parameres lying diagonally across genitalia or parallel with one another or sometimes absent. Segment X roof-like, often complex in shape and occasionally asymmetrical. Inferior appendages more or less elongate, horizontal or upward-slanting, complex in shape and each usually 2-segmented. Second segment often indistinguishable from lobes formed by 1st segment; when distinguishable, arising from inner surface of 1st segment. Phallic apparatus complete, comprising phallotheca, endotheca and phallicata. Phallotheca supported by sclerotised connections to bases of inferior appendages and apicolateral margins of segment IX.
