Genus Lesperonia Tournouër, 1874 †
Type species. Cerithium trochoides Fuchs, 1870 , by monotypy, Oligocene , Western Tethys ( Italy) .
Diagnosis. High conical shell with high last whorl. Teleoconch whorls straight-sided, angulated in abapical quarter. Aperture elongate with broad, flaring peristome. Sculpture comprising few prominent spiral cords and numerous spiral striae. No umbilicus.
Remarks. This monospecific genus is reminiscent of the extant Cantharidinae Phasianotrochus P. Fischer, 1885 . Consequently, Lesperonia was placed in Cantharidinae by Lozouet (2013, 2014; see discussion on systematic position in Lozouet 2014: 16). The genus is restricted to the early Oligocene of the NE Atlantic and the Western Tethys.
