[Vespertilio] brasiliensis Desmarest 1819 View in CoL , Nouv. Dict. Hist. Nat., Nouv. ed., Vol. 35: 478.
Type Locality: Brazil, Goias (restricted by Cabrera, 1957).
Vernacular Names: Brazilian Brown Bat.
Subspecies: :
Subspecies Eptesicus (Eptesicus) brasiliensis subsp. brasiliensis Desmarest 1819
Subspecies Eptesicus (Eptesicus) brasiliensis subsp. argentinus Thomas 1920
Subspecies Eptesicus (Eptesicus) brasiliensis subsp. melanopterus Jentink 1904
Subspecies Eptesicus (Eptesicus) brasiliensis subsp. thomasi Davis 1966
Distribution: Veracruz ( Mexico) south to N Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay; Trinidad and Tobago.
Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Subgenus Eptesicus . Does not include andinus , chiriquinus , inca , or montosus ; see Davis (1966) and Simmons and Voss (1998). Davis (1966) suggested that the holotype of hilarii may be referable to fuscus , but retained it in brasiliensis pending more comparisons. See Williams (1978 c) for discussion of hilarii and melanopterus. Subspecies were delimited by Davis (1966), but additional specimens collected subsequently have made subspecies limits somewhat unclear.
