A new replacement name for Lonchodes fruhstorferi (Carl 1913)

F. SEOW-CHOEN

Seow-Choen (2023 p. 80–82) discussed the two female types of Dixippus fruhstorferi , described by Carl, 1913 (p. 29), from Bawean Island , Java in Indonesia, and deposited in Muséum d’histoire Naturelle de Genève, Switzerland (MHNG Geneva). This species Dixippus fruhstorferi Carl, 1913 , however belongs to Lonchodes Gray 1835 , as the entire body is finely granulose and the metanotum lacks a V-shaped keel. Seow-Choen therefore transferred Carl’s species, with a new combination name as Lonchodes fruhstorferi (Carl 1913) , and designated a lectotype. This combination name, however, makes it a junior homonym of Lonchodes fruhstorferi Brunner 1907 (p. 260), which is a separate species found in Vietnam.

This homonym was pointed out to me by Paul Brock on 14 Feb 2024. Brock discovered this homonym whilst he was entering the new combination name into the Phasmida Species File (Brock, P.D., Büscher, T. & Baker, E., 2024). A new replacement name is therefore needed for Carl’s species of 1913.

Both the female types of Carl’s original specimens were from Bawean Island , off Java In Indonesia. These two specimens are the only known examples of this taxon to date.

Bawean is located in the Java Sea, about 120 km from the port of Gresik in East Java. It is approximately 15 km in diameter, and is encircled by a single narrow road. Bawean is dominated by an extinct 655 masl volcano at its center. The name Bawean comes from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘here is sunlight.’ The beaches of Bawean island are dominated by crystal clear seas, with beautiful lakes, waterfalls and pristine forests on the island itself. As far as known, this newly re-named species is endemic to Bawean Island. The island also has a highly threatened and endemic deer species, the Bawean hog-deer which is found nowhere else on earth (Semiadi, Duckworth & Timmins 2015). Carl’s species of 1913, is now re-named after Bawean Island. The new replacement name is therefore Lonchodes baweanensis Seow-Choen, 2024 nom. nov.

The holotype and the paratype of Lonchodes baweanensis Seow-Choen, 2024 nom. nov. , are from Bawean Island. Both specimens are deposited in MHNG Geneva (i.e. former lectotype and paralectotype respectively of Dixippus fruhstorferi Carl, 1913: 29 ) and are shown in the accompanying photographs (Figs. 1–4).
