From the brief diagnosis of G. subcostatus, it is unclear how many specimens did Ménétriés examine. However, the size range provided and the note that the species is “very common on hawthorn and rosehip flowers” suggest that a number of specimens was examined. In the ZIN collection, there are two specimens bearing small labels with 4- digit numbers, a number 1 or 2 and additional data “Ms. Talysch”. One of these specimens also bears a handwritten label by Ménétriés. There was no practice in Ménétriés’ time to label each specimen; the specimens were just pinned next to a bottom label (“6429 subcostatus Menets trans cauc.” in this case). It was apparently Morawitz, who became the curator after Ménétriés, and who put small labels with 4-digit numbers. There are no records found explaining what the 4-digit numbers mean exactly, but apparently 4-digit number corresponds to a species in the collection and the number after a hyphen – to a specimen. There is no doubt that the both specimens belong to the series from which Ménétriés described G. subcostatus and should be considered syntypes. To ensure stability of the nomenclature, the specimen bearing the original Ménétriés’ label and illustrated in Figs. 11–14 is designated the lectotype.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03DC6E05AF35D978FF4FFD270DC8FA03	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
