Scaphium ferrugineum Reitter, 1880: 41 ; syn. n.

(Figs 1–12)

Remarks. The type material of S. castanipes comes from “a journey from New York to Cumberland-house” (Kirby 1837). Subsequently, several authors provided new records and/or mentioned some of the adult characters (Casey 1893; Bowditch 1896; Clark 1949; Hatch 1957; Campbell 1991; Downie & Arnett 1996; Newton et al. 2000; Betz et al. 2003; Webster et al. 2012). The larval characters are given by Ashe (1984), Newton (1991), and Leschen (1993).

Natural history. Leschen (1983) noted S. castanipes feeding on Basidiomycetes. Ashe (1984) gave as host fungi Collybia sp. , Cortinarius sp. and Russula sp. According to Newton (1991) the species feeds on hyphae of mushrooms and coral fungi ( Agaricales and Clavariaceae ). Many specimens were trapped by late A. Smetana in heaps of rotting fungi in the Yucon Territory (A. Smetana, personal comm.).

Synonymy. The type material of S. ferrugineum is a single female, bearing following labels: Cap b. sp. Chevrolat (handwritten) / ferrugineum 1879. m. (handwritten, likely by E. Reitter) / TYPE (printed on red label) / ferrugineum Rtt (handwritten) / Lectotype Scaphium ferruginueum Reitt. (handwritten) det. Löbl 1987 (printed) (MNHN). This specimen does not exhibit any relevant distinguishing characters from S. castanipes . Thus, S. ferrugineum Reitter, 1880 is here placed in synonymy of the latter name.

Lectotype designation. Reitter (1880) has not mentioned the number of examined specimens. To avoid any future confusion, the sole available type specimen is here designated as lectotype.

Distribution range. Throughout Canada, the Northern United States and Alaska.

Scaphium immaculatum (Olivier)

Scaphium rufipes Reitter, 1883: 41 .

(Figs 13–24)

Remarks. The species was based on specimens collected near Paris, France (Olivier, 1790: 20: 5). It was originally assigned to Scaphidium Olivier, 1790 , and transferred to Scaphium by Erichson (1845). Reitter (1883) redescribed S. immaculatum as a new species, Scaphium rufipes , based on a female collected at Kars (East Turkey). The latter name was placed in synonymy by Iablokoff-Khnzorian (1985). Many European authors provided records and mentioned adult characters of S. immaculatum (see Löbl 2018), but only Tamanini (1969, 1970) gave detailed redescriptions. The larval characters of S. immaculatum remain unknown.

Natural history. As fungi hosts are known Boletus sp. (Fröhlich 1897), Ramaria aurea (in Horion 1949), Russula nigricans (in Benick 1952) and Lactarius piperatus (in Burakowski et al. 1978). Zamotajlov & Nikitsky (2010) reported the species from unidentified rotten fungi. Redtenbacher (1874) noted occurrence on willow tree fungi, and according to Köhler (2009) the species occurs mainly under Sambucus niger . Horion (1949) compiled known data and noted as the habitat moss, moist coniferous litter, fungi on oak stumps, and rotting fungi. Horion (1949) and Plaisier (1986) noted the occurrence on French, German and Netherland coastal dunes. Tamanini (1970) gave oak leaf litter as the habitat in Italy, according to Daufin (2014) the species was found in France in dead leaves and litter, and IL found the species in Greece, Turkey, Israel, and Algeria sieving moist leaf litter.

Distribution range. Europe except Fennoscandia and the Baltic States, Georgia, Algeria and Tunisia, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Iran (Löbl 2018).

Remarks. This species was based on a specimen coming from the Sarafschan Valley, near Aksay, Uzbekistan (Solsky 1874). Subsequently, it was recorded from a number of Asian localities by Heyden (1880, 1893, 1896), Jakobson (1910), Iablokoff-Khnzorian (1985), Löbl (1986, 1992) and Kompantsev & Pototskaya (1987). The larva of S. quadraticolle is described in the latter paper.

Natural history. Kompantsev & Pototskaya (1987) observed the larvae in living sporocarps of Agaricales . IL collected the species in Pakistan from sieved samples of moist forest leaf litter. The Pakistan sites are all from altitudes between 2000 and 3000 m above s. l.
