Type species. Leptagrion lencioninetoi Lencioni, 2017, by present designation.

Etymology: From Fredy, short form of Frederico in honor to Frederico Augusto Rodrigues Lencioni (b. 2007), my beloved son + agrion, neuter form of agrios (ἄγριος) meaning “wild”, which in damselflies is now used as an indicator that the genus belongs to the Coenagrionidae (Fliedner 2006) .

Generic characterization. Medium sized Coenagrionidae (35.9–53 mm), pale postocular spots and pale occipital bar absent, rear of the head black, cerci longer than S10, basal section “C”-shaped with dorsal border enlarged, apical extremity dorso-ventrally flattened, with a subterminal tooth (STT) curved medially or slightly cephalad, and possessing or a terminal apical tooth (TAT), which can have blunt or acute apexes (in F. lencioninetoi and F. siqueirai STT and TAT are fused), paraproctus vestigial (plate-like) and penes of all species are virtually identical with S1 highly modified forming a robust heavily chitinized stem, S3 with a pair of blade-like distal tips (Fig. A5) and a medial swelling heavily chitinized.
