Notes. – Scapania portoricensis is the only neotropical member of the large, holarctic genus Scapania (Dumort.) Dumort. and characteristic of upper montane cloud forests (FRAHM & GRADSTEIN, 1991). The species is readily recognized by its reddish color, large size (to 20 cm long and 1 cm wide), toothed leaf margins, very short keel and stellate gemmae. Scapania minutidens is a robust phenotype of S. portoricensis .
