Graphocaecilius sullivani n. sp.

(Figs 11–20)

Diagnosis. Differing from G. e n d e r l ei n i, G. lacteus, G. peruvianus, and G. vartyi, in having the forewings extensively marked with brown. It differs from G. interpretatus, G. p i ct u s, and G. trypetoides, all with forewings spotted, in the forewing spotting pattern (see Figs 11 and 16); it is the only species in which R2+3, R4+5, M1, M2, M3, and the distal half of the areola postica are surrounded by a brown band. The phallosome is anteriorly unstemmed, and the shape of the hypandrium (Fig. 15) is autapomorphic.

Male. Color. Body tawny brown (Fig. 27), compound eyes black, legs pale brown, forewings with brown areas as illustrated (Fig. 11), hindwings hyaline, with a pale brown hue. Tergal lobes of meso- and metathorax pale brown, abdomen creamy, with pale brown subcuticular bands. Clunial projections brown, projections over the area of the paraprocts more pigmented; epiproct creamy with posterior border dark brown, paraprocts creamy with pale brown areas. Hypandrium pale brown (Fig. 15).

Morphology. As in diagnosis plus the following: Head vertex slightly convex (Fig. 12). Compound eyes prominent, below the level of the vertex. Forewing L/W: 2.50. Forewing pterostigma elongate, much wider posteriorly, lp/wp: 2.96, with setae in the membrane, towards the distal end. Areola postica triangular (Fig. 11). Hindwing L/W: 2.72 (Fig. 11). Male hypandrium setose, with distal projection triconcave, as illustrated (Fig. 15). Phallosome unstemmed anteriorly; external parameres slender and slightly thickened apically, with pores. Aedeagal arch with broad arms (Fig. 14). Endophallus with an anterior group of minute denticles and six median sclerites, disposed as illustrated (Fig. 14). Posterior border of clunium projected over the area of the epiproct, covering about one third the length of it; one lateral triangular projection over the area of each paraproct (Fig. 13); a clear crescent mesally. Paraprocts (Fig. 13) broad, with few setae, restricted to the latero-median area; sensory fields with 18 trichobothria in basal rosettes. Epiproct (Fig. 13) straight anteriorly, rounded posteriorly, projected in the middle, bearing three distal macrosetae.

Female. Color. Same as in the male, except for thorax darker than in the male (Fig. 28).

Morphology. Head as in the male; compound eyes smaller, below the level of the vertex (Fig. 17). Forewing L/W: 2.60. Pterostigma, lp/wp: 2.68. Areola postica triangular, narrow, slanted posteriorly (Fig. 16). Hindwing L/ W: 2.78 (Fig. 16). Subgenital plate broadly trapeziform, with sides converging to straight posterior border, densely setose, with a longitudinal hyaline band; IX sternum rounded anteriorly, obtusely concave in the middle (Fig. 20); gonapophyses with v1 elongate and slender, joined to clunium; v2 +3 with sides almost parallel, slightly projected distally, with a hyaline band along anterior border (Fig. 20). Paraprocts rhomboid, twice as long as wide, setae as illustrated; sensory fields with 14–16 trichobothria issuing from basal rosettes (Fig. 18). Epiproct triangular, with rounded apex, a row of macrosetae toward posterior margin and three short setae apically (Fig. 18).
