Comments: Bickley (1952) noted that the “varietal names [of Chrysopa oculata] are no longer of any value”, but did not explicitly synonymize these names. Garland (1985a) used this to conclude that the name carei “no longer represents a valid taxonomic category… and is unavailable”. This interpretation would appear to be valid according to ICZN (1999: Art. 45.6.4), as the original description suggested that this was not a distinct taxon, but an unavailable name of infrasubspecific rank: “The chief excuse for indicating this colorational form as a variety is to indicate that this is not a distinct species, but a striking form attained by the gradual disappearance of vertical markings.” (Smith 1932).
