Distribution: Global: North, Central and South America; from northern Florida, USA, southward through the Greater and Lesser Antilles to Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela, Atlantic drainages; Costa Rica: SJ, SC, Sa, To, Pa, Ma, Si (Atlantic) and Be (Pacific), 0– 300 m.a.s.l., Per, Dia (Cat).

Remarks: This Atlantic species has been translocated to the Pacific (from the San Carlos River basin to the Bebedero River basin) as result of the transport of water for irrigation and aquaculture purposes carried out by private and governmental entities.
