Ogdoecosta catenulata (Boheman 1854)
(Figs 5 A–H; 6 A–F)
Chelymorpha catenulata Boheman 1854:35
Male. Length 10.9–11.6 mm, width 7–8 mm (n=15). Yellow, fulvous or black, pubescent.
HEAD. Surface fulvous, with punctures and pubescence. Genal surface rugose, weakly punctate, pubescent. Interocular width 2 times diameter of eyes. Antennae short, not exceeding pronotal base; antennomere III shorter than IV. Clypeus oval in shape, 1.5–2 times wider than long; surface with scattered punctures and pubescence. Labrum 2–3 times wider than long; surface smooth.
THORAX. Pronotum 2–3 times wider than long, surface pubescent, with three black; anterior margin emarginated, margination U-shaped; transverse spots close to the base; explanate margin coarsely punctate; lateral margin rounded; pronotal disc without longitudinal groove. Prosternum smooth, pubescent. Scutellum triangular, surface smooth, black or fulvous; apex rounded. Elytra surface pubescent; punctures irregular, coarse; humeri rounded. Prosternal process with scattered setae, moderately grooved, apex rounded. Mesosternal process notched.
ABDOMEN. Ventrites surface smooth, pubescent, black or brown. Aedeagus length no more than 2 mm, apex acute (Fig. 19 B).
Female. Similar to male. Length 10–12 mm, width 7–8 mm (n=15). Interocular width 2 times diameter of eyes. Clypeus 1.5–2 times as wide as long. Labrum 2–3 times wider than long. Pronotum 2–3 times wider than long. Spermatheca partially sclerotized (Fig. 19 B), over 2 times longer than wide; apex acute, with velum; spermathecal duct weakly coiled.
Comparative note. This species is very variable in colors and size, with some specimens brown and yellow with black spots, and others fully black. The species is distinguished from other species in the genus by its moderately convex shape. Ogdoecosta juvenca is near to this species but can be distinguished by its clypeus being sub-trapezoidal; mesosternal process deeply notched and spermatheca less than 2 times longer than wide.
Remarks. Champion (1893) examined the type specimens of O. catenulata and its synonym C. undecimmaculata . He argued that the only differences between these taxa were the size and coloration. We corroborated this observation by examining the same type specimens. There is a great variation in size among O. catenulata and there is no apparent relation between size, color, and geographical distribution. The elytral pattern is very variable; some specimens have five spots on each elytron at most, some with three or six; two are close to the base, one of this on the callus, another two are in the middle part and one is close to the apex, the last ones are on the elytral margin; some specimens have black elytra (Fig. 6 F).
