This name is based on elements previously treated (in Sp. Pl. 2: 799. 1753) as two unnamed varieties of L. hispidus L. Although not typified by any of the following authors, the name has been variously interpreted by Britten (in J. Bot. 45: 32. 1907), Lacaita (in J. Bot. 56: 97. 1918) and Finch & Sell (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 71: 245. 1976).
