Lilium superbum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum, ed. 2, 1: 434. 1762.
"Habitat in America septentrionali." RCN: 2388.
Lectotype (designated here by Reveal): [icon] " Lilium foliis sparsis, multiflorum, floribus reflexis, fundo aureo, limbo aurantio, punctis nigricantibus, pedunculis singulis unico folio instructis " in Trew, Pl. Select.: 2, t. 11. 1751.
Current name: Lilium superbum L. ( Liliaceae).
Note: See discussion by Woodcock & Stearn (Lilies World: 345. 1950), whose f. 110 (and see above) is of Trew’s illustration which was cited in the protologue. Adams & Dress (in Baileya 21: 179. 1982) treated 420.8 (LINN) as the lectotype, but rightly state there is nothing to link this material with the name. It is not original material and is ineligible for designation as the lectotype.
